Growers of Carrots dread pulling up their crop only to find small tunnels burrowed into their Carrots hinting the dreaded Carrot Fly has struck. Carrot Fly are attracted to by Carrot sent and lay their eggs amongst Carrots, the larvae then emerge eating into the Carrots.
Considerations before planting
Before sowing Carrots consider the ground, have you showed Carrots in the same area in the recent past? If you have its worth choosing a different location if possible. Does your chosen location support multi sowing, hiding Carrots among other veg and flowers is a proven tactic.
Prevent Carrot Fly finding your Carrots
Planting Carrots partnered with plants such as Chives, Garlic, Alliums, Marigolds, or any other strong scented plants. Overwhelming Carrot scent with others scents will make it harder for Carrot Fly to sniff out your Carrot Crop.
Avoid disturbing your Carrot bed if possible, thinning and weeding will release the Carrot sent into the air attracting Carrot Fly.
Carrot Fly only stay low to the ground hunting for Carrots, sowing your Carrots in a raised bed will put them out of reach. If raised beds aren't an option, erecting barriers with fleece around your Carrots will also prevent Carrot Fly getting to your crop.
